The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 598

He shook his head. He just couldn’t do it.

Jace took a breath, forced himself to be firm, and gently pushed Lilly away. “Lilly, I’ve told you before. There’s no way this will work between us. Please, just go home.”

Lilly hesitated. “But I…”

He cut her off, calling her name a little harder this time. “Lilly, don’t make things harder for me. Go back, okay?”

Don’t make things harder for me. That was what he said.

If he’d said anything else, maybe Lilly would have stayed. Maybe she would have kept fighting for him. But he asked her not to make trouble.

She let him go, her hand slipping from his arm. Without another word, she turned around and walked away.

She only made it a few steps before glancing over her shoulder, her eyes lingering on him, full of hope she was trying to swallow. She gave a little wave. “Jace, goodbye. If you ever need anything, call me, okay? I’ll always be waiting for your call.”

Her soft silhouette vanished around the corner, and Jace stood there, watching her disappear. She was always so sweet. It was killing him to let her go.

But he had things he needed to do.

His phone started ringing, the cheery ringtone slicing through his heavy thoughts. It was Lilian.

He answered. Her voice came through instantly, impatient and worried. “Jace, where are you? My dad just showed up, he’s looking for you. Come back, now.”

Brandon was here.

Jace ended the call, shoved his phone back in his pocket, and hurried inside.

Lilian was already waiting for him, practically bouncing in the hallway. “Jace, you’re back! Where’s that waitress? Why did you take her away? What’s going on between you two?”

Jace looked at her, searching for words. “I…”

She pressed a finger to his lips. “Shhh. Don’t say anything. I just want you to be mine. And don’t worry, I didn’t say anything to my dad.”

Jace stayed quiet. He and Lilian walked together to where Brandon was waiting.
