“What did you just say?”
Lucas’s voice was sharp, barely holding back his anger. “Lilly!”
Lilly let out a dry, mocking laugh. “What, Lucas? Are you mad? Why would you be? You and Sarah are together now, and that’s your business. But if you keep chasing after me, I’m not just going to stand here and take it.”
They were broken up. Done. They should have been living separate lives by now, but Lucas just wouldn’t leave her alone. And now, with a fresh hickey on his neck, he was gripping her wrist like he had any right to touch her. The feel of his hand made her skin crawl.
She tried to yank her arm free. “Lucas, let go. Now.”
He glared at her, jaw tight. “You…”
Just then, Sarah stepped out of the sports car. Her eyes locked onto Lilly, full of hostility. “Lilly, what do you think you’re doing? Lucas is my boyfriend now, and here you are, hanging all over him. You have no shame.”
Lilly just stared at her, completely exasperated. “Sarah, why don’t you take a look and see who’s actually grabbing who?”
She lifted her hand, still locked in Lucas’s grip.
Sarah’s face changed as she realized what was really happening. Lucas had been acting distant in the car, but now he was caught up in this with Lilly. She didn’t like it one bit.
Lilly turned to Lucas. “Your girlfriend’s here. Let go of me. Unless you want her to get the wrong idea?”
Lucas didn’t even look at Sarah. His eyes were fixed on Lilly’s face, stubborn and intense. “Lilly, are you still with Jace?”
Lilly didn’t hesitate. “Yes. He’s my boyfriend now.”
Boyfriend. The word hit Lucas like a slap. He scoffed, his tone icy. “Really, Lilly? Someone like Jace? That’s who you want?”
The warmth vanished from Lilly’s eyes. “Don’t talk about him like that. Jace is a great person, and I’ve never been ashamed of where he comes from. He’s hardworking and kind. That’s why I like him.”
