Matthew's hand shot forward in a blur, his palm crushing against Sogan's throat.

Sogan did not even understand how Matthew had closed the distance that fast.

"Kill me… and you'll regret it…" Sogan rasped, his words breaking into a weak hiss.

"I'd only regret it if I let you live," Matthew replied coldly.

His grip tightened. Sogan fought for air, clawing uselessly, until his breath faded away and silence fell over him.

This man had tried to scare him, yet Matthew's mind drifted back to District 13, where a gorgon envoy had begged on his knees to be nothing more than a dog before death. Matthew had not even bothered to look at him then.

He wiped his hand clean. His face shifted, returning to the plain, harmless face of the apothecary's owner.

Then his eyes caught on something else. The lifeless body of a pregnant woman lay on the ground.

"How long has she been gone?" Matthew asked the women locked in the cage.

They had overheard his exchange with Sogan, and believing he was part of the Medusa Gang, they shrank together in fear, saying nothing.

"Do not be afraid," Matthew said gently. "I came to save you."

He unlocked the cage and stepped aside so they could step out.

When they saw he meant no harm, one braver than the others spoke. Her voice shook as she explained the woman had died only moments before Matthew entered, her lungs starved of air.

Matthew's gaze dropped to the dead woman's belly. By his judgment, the child was eight or nine months along, nearly ready to be born.

Mothers in their final weeks often suffered when the growing child pressed against their lungs and heart. Breathing grew hard. Without enough oxygen, the mother could suffocate.

The cave was sealed tight, the air heavy and unmoving, and that suffocating heat had stolen her breath.

Then Matthew saw it. The woman's belly shifted, the faintest tremor under her skin.

"The child is still alive!" Matthew's voice rang out.

"Please, help me," he urged the women. "I am a doctor. I must deliver the baby now. Bring me clean water and cloth."
