Serpent charged with wild strength, but his body betrayed him. His limbs lagged behind his mind. Matthew's elbow swung forward with flawless precision. The strike crushed into Serpent's chest. His ribs caved, blood poured from his lips, and his body crumpled lifeless to the floor.
Matthew's voice was cold. "I meant to let you breathe for a few more days. You just had to get yourself killed."
The envoy lingered in the shadows. Her eyes glimmered with awe. His inner energy was terrifying. A man like him could never be allowed as an enemy. He had to be claimed, not fought.
Matthew carried Herbert to a couch and set him down gently. He called on the power within his pendant. Its glow washed through Herbert's body, tracing the damage left inside him.
Herbert's body could still move, but his mind was gone. He was nothing more than a shell that walked. Whatever torture the envoy had forced upon him had shattered his sanity.
Matthew knew what had to be done. The Solitary Nine Needles were his only option.
He raised one hand. Nine silver needles slipped between his fingers, their tips shining in the dim light.
The envoy's breath caught. Before she could see his hand move, the nine needles had already pierced Herbert's head, striking nine vital points.
Herbert's legs still carried him, but his thoughts were vacant. Only his mind could be called back, and only through the head.
Matthew twisted the needles. A faint spark flickered in Herbert's blank eyes. His face changed. Fear surged into his expression. It was the terror of a man seeing some horror beyond belief.
Matthew's fingers shifted again. All nine needles quivered at once. Herbert's body shook. His eyes stretched wide. His scream tore through the air before his body collapsed, sinking back into unconsciousness.
The envoy laughed. Her voice was sharp.
"So, this is your great medical skill? For a moment, I almost believed you."
Matthew's gaze was steady. "He fainted because his mind woke. He remembered the last moment before his mind broke. That memory scared him enough to knock him out again."
Her smile froze. Her tongue fell silent.
Matthew pulled out the needles. He pressed beneath Herbert's nose. Slowly, Herbert's eyes opened again.
His gaze locked on Matthew. Fear filled his pupils. His whole body trembled.
Matthew spoke softly. "You don't need to fear me. I'm from Cathay, just like you."
Herbert's breath hitched. He saw his savior and then glanced toward the envoy. Panic crashed over him. He grabbed Matthew's arm with frantic force.
