"The first floor has a sorting sector filled with civilians. We will get them out, but the gorgons patrol that place like hawks. We need to move quietly.
"I will wear the face of Lauro, the commander of the first floor. You will pose as one of his men. No one will dare stop us."
He reached to his belt, pulled free several small packets, and pressed them into Herbert's hands.
"I mixed this plague powder only moments ago. When we go in for inspection, I will keep them distracted. You must spread this powder into every corner."
Herbert's brow furrowed, his voice heavy with doubt. "I thought we were here to save them. Why are we spreading poison?"
Matthew's stare stayed firm. "This powder has no real bite. At most, it will bring fevers. It will not take a single life. But it will cover their skin with rashes that no one can ignore."
"And that will force them to move the prisoners out!" Herbert's breath caught as the truth sank in, his eyes bright with sudden understanding.
"You're not as hopeless as I thought."
Since this was Herbert's first disguise, Matthew had to craft it himself.
He pulled bottles from his coat and worked the contents with quick, careful hands until the mixture thickened into a heavy gray paste.
He smeared it across Herbert's face, coating each feature until not a trace of his real skin remained.
Once it hardened, Matthew peeled it off, adjusted its shape with steady fingers, then pressed it back over Herbert's face until it seemed alive.
Herbert caught his reflection and nearly stumbled back. "That looks terrifyingly real!"
Matthew slid on the mask of Lauro he had prepared before.
Herbert squinted and spoke with urgency. "Matteo, Lauro was balding. I remember it."
Matthew's heart gave a sharp jolt. How could he forget such a detail?
He snatched up a wig he had prepared, combed it into sharp strands that receded just enough, and set it over his head. Lauro's likeness appeared so clearly that it could chill a man's blood.
"Then let us move, Commander Lauro."
They traded a quick smile, then walked side by side toward the first floor.
The guards stiffened at the sight of Matthew in Lauro's form. They straightened, nodded, and pushed the gates open with forced respect.
