Sogan spoke words while he smoked them, and he wore a troubled look.
They're putting their hands on pregnant women? They're going to kill both mothers and babies! Matthew thought.
Matthew felt fear growing inside him, and he knew his slow behavior would cause more innocent people to suffer.
"I can help you, captain," Matthew said, and he offered his help. "My alternative medicine clinic treats many people every day, and it receives pregnant patients. I can shelter them."
Sogan saw hope rise, and he answered that he would wait for good news.
"The sky will show light soon," Matthew said, and he promised to check the supplies. "It won't be fresh if it's dead."
Sogan rose to leave, and he turned back to take several boxes of Matthew's Kiss of God.
Sogan said he would give the medicine to his men, and he promised to recommend Matthew to the envoy.
After Sogan left the pharmacy, another figure followed him quietly, and that figure kept out of sight.
At the faint dawn, Sogan reached a hidden cave, and the terrain around it proved difficult to cross. The path demanded familiarity, and the traveler needed a strong sense of direction.
A single wrong step would trap a person in a maze, and the wrong step would make escape hard.
Sogan had visited this place many times, and he still pulled out a map to check the route.
After he confirmed that nobody watched, Sogan entered the cave, and Matthew followed like a ghost without noise.
Matthew found no dismembered bodies in the cave, and he saw only a few of Sogan's men guarding a cage.
The cages held about twenty pregnant women, and the women looked weak and utterly exhausted. When the women saw Sogan arrive, they wrapped their hands around their bellies, and they tried to protect their children.
"How did another one die?" Sogan shouted, and he blamed his men for the loss. "You'd better eat and rest, or I will force you to miscarry."
Sogan found a pregnant woman lying dead in the cage, and he began to curse her fate.
"This group arrived sick before we locked them," one trembling man said, and he explained the problem.
"Can you not find better ones?" Sogan snapped, and he complained about the shortages.
"The supply is too small, and you keep losing them."
