Seeing Uncle Julian's grim expression, Gordon's eyes showed a hint of panic. He shot me a furtive glance.
I knew exactly what he was thinking. The Lancaster Group wasn't afraid of the Lopez family, but the pressure from public opinion would be a real problem.
A headline like “Aether Studio CEO Breaks and Enters” would be enough for the media to have a field day, stirring up a whole series of unnecessary scandals.
I glanced at Steven. Although he was listening to Uncle Julian's lecture, the stubbornness was written all over his face. It was clear he wouldn't back down and beg for forgiveness.
The atmosphere was ice-cold. The security chief looked around but still hesitated to make a move.
Seeing this, Ryan urged him with a stern face, “Mr. James, what are you waiting for? Call the police!”
The security chief gave me a troubled look and reluctantly pulled out his phone.
Steven's gaze remained fixed on me, as if he couldn't care less what Uncle Julian was saying or what consequences he might face.
I was speechless. What on earth was going through his mind? How could he not be worried at a time like this?
If the shareholders got wind of this, it would be a real disaster.
Just as the security chief's finger was about to press the dial button, I quickly shouted, “Wait!”
My voice instantly drew everyone's attention. Ryan looked at me, confused. “What are you doing?”
I was a bit dazed myself, not sure why I had blurted that out.
But on second thought, I couldn't just watch Steven get taken away by the police and end up on the front page the next day!
After all, he was still the father of my child.
So, I braced myself and said to Uncle Julian, “Uncle Julian, maybe we should just let this go for tonight.”
Before Uncle Julian could reply, a flash of delight crossed Steven's eyes, and the corner of his mouth curved into a knowing smile.
I couldn't be bothered to guess what he was thinking. I just wanted to end this drama as quickly as possible.
But Ryan wouldn't let it go. “Why? If he dares to climb the wall today, he'll dare to kidnap you tomorrow!”
“Exactly! He's definitely planning to drag you back, wait for you to have the baby, then take the child and go back to fooling around with that Verna woman.”
Hearing this, Steven's brow furrowed, and he quickly denied it. “I'm not. There's nothing between Verna and me. If you have to define it, it's an employer-employee relationship.”
Ryan wasn't buying it. “Nice try. Everyone knows how good you are to that Verna. Weren't you just talking about getting married a while ago? You're just trying to trick Zephyra into having your baby!”
Steven looked at me. “Zephyra, you know that was all my parents' doing. I've already made it clear to them. It won't happen again! And Verna won't appear before you again.”
Ryan snorted. “That doesn't change the fact that you were a jerk.”
