I instinctively grabbed Steven's hand and held it up to the light. A gash, about an inch long, came into view, the dried blood around it a testament to the danger just moments before.
"You're hurt?"
Steven seemed to only just notice, his brow furrowed as he asked me back, "Why are your hands so cold?"
It was then I realized that in my rush to check on the situation downstairs, I had only thrown on a thin jacket.
A gust of night wind made me shiver, and I cursed Steven under my breath for his jinxing words.
Seeing this, he didn't hesitate, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and saying firmly, "I'll take you back to your room!"
The moment we were inside, I snapped back to reality and demanded, "Who said you could follow me up here?"
Steven looked innocent. "You didn't say no, so I assumed you wanted me to come up."
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Why didn't you assume I wanted you to get lost?"
He blinked, looking at me innocently, and held up his injured hand. "My hand is hurt!"
I sighed in resignation, my gaze falling back to his wound. Under the light, his hand looked exceptionally pale, making the gash seem even more alarming.
Whatever. He was already inside. I might as well do a good deed.
I pulled a first-aid kit from the cabinet. Ryan had prepared it for my baby—it was a soft pink color, adorned with cute cartoon stickers.
I took out some rubbing alcohol and poured it directly onto his wound without hesitation.
I expected him to wince in pain, but his expression remained unchanged. Only his deep eyes stayed fixed on me, as if trying to see right through me.
I deliberately jabbed at the wound with a cotton swab, and he finally let out a muffled grunt. "That hurts!"
I shot him a glare. "If you know it hurts, don't do something so stupid next time!"
A glimmer of light flashed in Steven's eyes. "But I wanted to see you!"
Steven's voice was gentle, and it made my heart tremble. I nearly dropped the cotton swab.
From the time I had amnesia until my memories returned, he had become increasingly skilled at sweet talk, making me blush unexpectedly every time.
I took a deep, subtle breath to calm myself. "But I don't want to see you!"
