I gripped my fishing rod, trying my best not to laugh and give my 'side piece' the wrong idea.
"No, thanks. I've already eaten. I have things to do, so I can't chat. Goodbye."
As I turned to leave, Horace grabbed my arm.
He was much taller than me and looked down at me.
"Last night, did Steven fill your head with more nonsense to drive a wedge between us? We're engaged—you can look it up. Don't believe a word he says. Here, use my phone to check, okay?"
Before I could speak, David, standing next to me, gasped. His disdainful gaze shifted from Horace to me.
"This is your fiancé? Holy crap, you're two-timing them!"
I am not!
Horace stared at me intently, defending me. "Zephyra isn't two-timing anyone. She divorced Steven. We're together officially."
David was even more shocked. "Holy crap, you're divorced?! Steven is clearly a catch, and you left him?! And you're still sharing a room with him while seeing another guy behind his back? You—you—"
He was furious, completely indignant on Steven's behalf.
I wanted to clamp my hand over David's mouth!
Steven and I are just sharing a room, nothing happened! Why did he have to make me sound so promiscuous?
I didn't dare look at Horace, trying to de-escalate the situation. "Um, I really do have to go. Please let go of me."
The smile on Horace's lips suddenly faded.
"Matching outfits. Are you two going on a date?" David saw Steven too, wincing with envy. He sidled up to me and whispered, "Hey, both of these top-tier guys seem to be into you. How do you do it? Give me some tips."
Me: "..."
He added sourly, "Between these two, who do you like more? It must be a tough choice. Do you dream about having one on each arm at night?"
I slapped a hand over David's mouth. "Just stop talking."
Are you trying to get me killed?
Can't you see Steven's cold smile and Horace's dark expression?!
Damn him. This time, my so-called friend has thrown me right into the middle of a warzone!
