"Yes, I ran away." Demi gave a small nod.
"You were very young at that time, weren't you? Your adoptive parents said you went missing when you were nine," Zack stated.
"That's correct. I had never left the village before, so I didn't know where to go. I just kept walking in one direction. When there was no road, I just walked through the thorn bushes and climbed over cliffs.
"It wasn't that I didn't know how to find an easier path. I was just afraid I'd be caught if I took it. The harder the path, the safer I felt. I walked for a long time and was afraid to stop. I just knew that if I got caught, I would be living in hell for the rest of my life.
"Eventually, I came to Lindton. I was found by Grandma, who was rummaging through the trash bins for food. She brought me back home."
As she finished speaking, Demi's eyes turned red, her voice became hoarse, and her eyes softened.
She had remained calm when she was talking about the hardships she had gone through. However, she couldn't hold back her tears the moment she mentioned Margaret. Margaret had given her shelter and warmth when she was at her loneliest.
Margaret had taken Demi in. She had helped Demi change into clean clothes and given her a warm meal, making Demi's reddened eyes fill with heartache.
Just like back then, Demi couldn't help the redness in her eyes.
Demi had never felt such warmth before meeting Margaret. She could grit her teeth and not shed a tear whenever her adoptive parents beat and scolded her. However, she couldn't help but break down when faced with kindness and love.
Zack and Henry fell silent.
After a long pause, Zack opened his mouth again. "Since the Pitt family brought you back, why did they make you their housekeeper?"
Demi was silent.
"I think you should ask them about that." Demi quickly regained her composure.
"Then, let's return to our initial question. Do you think Ms. Michelle Leary closed the car door by accident, or did she intentionally try to kill you?" Zack had on a serious expression when asking this.
