When Kent left the hospital, Silvia had just finished talking with members of the Ashford family.
She leaned back against the bed, lifting a tired hand to gently pinch the bridge of her nose. A faint sigh slipped from her lips.
Unlocking her phone, Silvia pulled up a message from the wedding planner—photos and videos from the engagement party.
The staff had been clever. They’d edited Nannie out of every shot, layered in sweet background music, and pieced together footage with artful cuts and transitions, creating the illusion of a perfect, blissful celebration.
Silvia watched the video again and again. Her long lashes fluttered ever so slightly.
Just moments ago, her parents had told her:
“If you’re unhappy with the arrangement, you can call it off anytime. We want you to be happy, Silvia.”
She’d turned them down.
After everything that happened with Shipley, Silvia no longer dared to hope for some grand romance.
She chose to honor the engagement, not out of longing, but because in this sprawling city, only the Parsons and Ashford families were truly equals.
A marriage to Kent would be a win for both families. There was no reason not to go through with it.
It was time to start thinking about herself—and her family—first.
A call interrupted the video, snapping Silvia from her thoughts. She glanced at the caller ID, and a hint of melancholy shadowed her eyes.
Honestly, she didn’t want to answer Kent’s call right now.
But after a moment’s hesitation, Silvia pressed accept.
“Mr. Parsons, our engagement—it’s still on, isn’t it?”
Now that they were in private, she didn’t use his nickname, keeping her tone cool and distant.
Kent noticed. His lips pressed into a thin line, a furrow appearing between his brows. When he spoke, his voice was low and careful, carrying a rare gentleness. “Silvia, the promise I made you—that will never change.”
Silvia remembered his words on the phone.
