Shipley let out a sudden laugh, soft and warm, so gentle it almost made it seem as if he enjoyed being insulted.
But Silvia knew better. She could tell he was furious.
“Sweet Silvia, you know you’re my favorite,” he said, his lips barely moving, his words laced with a chill beneath the affection. “Why would I ever get tired of you? Come back to me. You can be my closest confidante at work, and my one and only in life. Let’s make it official—let’s tell the world about us.”
To put it bluntly, his company couldn’t function without her.
Silvia stayed silent, her head pounding as Shipley spoke. Was it really impossible to communicate with him?
After a long pause, she exhaled slowly, steadying herself. “Shipley, if you keep bothering Mr. Sanderson, I won’t hesitate to leak everything I know about your company.”
“Leaking confidential information, Sweet Silvia? That’s not like you,” Shipley replied, his anger flickering into a cool, mocking amusement. He almost seemed entertained.
Once, Sweet Silvia’s temper would flare in little fits, but as soon as he showed the slightest displeasure, she’d retreat and apologize.
Now? She wore her claws out in the open, every moment sharp and ready.
At first, Shipley didn’t know what to make of the change. Now, he found it far more interesting than her old submissiveness.
“And besides the secrets, your company’s been… dodging taxes, hasn’t it?” Silvia said, her tone light, almost breezy. “You made me a jack-of-all-trades, Shipley. I ought to thank you, really. Otherwise, I never would’ve figured out the millions your company owes in unpaid taxes.”
She’d once convinced herself Shipley’s company was just finding its footing—struggling, barely afloat. She’d known tax evasion was wrong, but she’d ignored it for love.
Eventually, she forgot about it entirely.
Until today. Now, it was the perfect leverage.
Sure enough, Shipley fell silent.
