Carmen only found out that Dorothea and Latham had finally talked things through when she saw it online.
“Dorothea, did you finally work everything out?”
“I did. Thanks, Carmen. I was actually planning to tell you, but you beat me to it.”
Well, that’s what happens when your husband can’t keep a secret. Latham had spent the whole night bouncing from one group chat to another, practically shouting the news to anyone who would listen. The excitement of becoming a dad for the first time—no one really gets it until it happens to them.
“I’m so jealous. Latham treats you so well. Seriously, I’ve done my research. He’s a good guy.”
“Carmen, you’ll find your own happiness too.”
Carmen didn’t sound convinced. “Ugh, Dorothea, I think I’m getting married.”
“What? With that guy you met on that blind date?”
“Yeah.” Carmen’s voice was heavy. “Pearson’s so uptight and old-school. Whatever. I guess we’ll just be married on paper.”
“Carmen, maybe it won’t be so bad.”
She let out a sigh. “I don’t know. I spent all my younger years obsessed with celebrities, never even dated anyone. And now I’m just rushing into marriage without a clue.”
If she’d ever had a boyfriend, or even a crush, she never would have agreed to her family’s plan.
Dorothea wasn’t sure how to comfort her. Honestly, Pearson seemed more stable and dependable than Latham. And with his status and reputation, there probably wouldn’t be any scandals or cheating. Maybe married life wouldn’t be so bad for them.
“Don’t bother trying to cheer me up, I just needed to vent. Anyway, congrats, Dorothea! And remember, I’m the only one allowed to be the baby’s godmother.”
Dorothea grinned. “Don’t worry. That spot is yours and yours alone.”
After she hung up, Dorothea watched Latham finish up his chores and come into the room.
“Babe, I want to listen to the baby.”
Dorothea stared at him. “Latham, seriously? The baby’s not even moving yet. It’s only been a few weeks.”
“Let me listen anyway.”
“Latham, could you be any more jealous?”
He smiled. “It’s fine. Except for being jealous, everything else about me is… big. You know that, don’t you?”
Dorothea could feel the heat from his hand. She pulled her own hand away quickly.
“Go to sleep!”
Latham leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Doctor said no sex for three months. I’ll behave, I promise.”
Dorothea huffed and turned her back to him, pulling the covers over her head. Her voice was muffled. “Go to sleep!”
***
When Albert fainted from anger, the Clark family called 911 right away. News of his hospital stay spread fast. Naturally, Jarrett found out Dorothea was pregnant too, but he didn’t think it had anything to do with Albert’s collapse.
“Albert, you can’t just focus on work. You need to take care of yourself and pay more attention to your personal life.”
