Pearson only took three days off work. The day he left, Buena showed up in Harrisburg to take care of Carmen.
“If you feel unwell, tell me, alright?”
“Okay.”
By now, exchanging WeChat wasn't the only thing they'd done. They’d even kissed once, but it would be a stretch to call them close.
Pearson smiled a little and ruffled her hair. “Go inside and wear something warm. I’m heading out.”
As he walked away, Carmen noticed the wedding band on his ring finger, a perfect match to her own. The silver glinted in the light, subtle but unmistakably intimate.
Twenty days slipped by. Despite everything, there was still a distance between them.
The only real change was that Pearson would text to tell Carmen his work schedule every night, like clockwork, until her hospital stay ended.
After landing with the rest of her team, Carmen was scrolling through her phone, ready to call a car, when Buena stopped her. Pearson’s coming to pick you up, she said.
Carmen looked over and saw him leaning against a black business car, on the phone, looking as relaxed as ever.
“Carmen, want to share a ride with us?” a coworker asked.
“No, thanks. Someone from my family’s picking me up.”
She waved and walked off, not hearing the whispers behind her.
“Was that Carmen’s husband?”
“Seems like it. When she was in the hospital, he even sent over a caretaker to look after her. That’s so sweet.”
Buena got into the passenger seat without a word, leaving Carmen to sit in the back with Pearson. The driver put the partition up, basically gifting them privacy.
Carmen could only sit there, speechless.
“Why’d he put the divider up?” she asked, just as Pearson said, “Did you miss me?”
The words tumbled out at the exact same time. Carmen’s heart skipped.
She felt her pulse in her ears, thudding along with the shifting lights outside the window. “Are you... feeling okay?”
Pearson reached for her and pulled her into his arms. “Yeah. I just missed you.”
His honesty hit Carmen hard, leaving her perfectly still. She tried to wriggle free, but Pearson’s grip only tightened.
The car rolled toward their apartment. Carmen’s nerves kicked up.
Once home, Pearson grabbed her suitcase and gave Buena the rest of the day off. He led Carmen upstairs.
They stood together in the elevator. As the digital numbers ticked up, Carmen’s heart thudded faster and faster.
The door unlocked with a facial scan. Inside, Pearson shoved the suitcase out of the way, shrugged off his jacket, and swept her up to sit on the entryway cabinet. His hand cradled her head, and he kissed her, deep and urgent.
“Mmm… Pearson…”
Her words came out in pieces, but it didn’t make him stop.
He held her tight. Carmen looped her arms around his waist and they kissed as he guided her to the sofa, taking care to set her down gently.
“Did you miss me, Carmen?” His voice was husky, hopeful.
“No way.” She turned her face to the side.
Only, his hand found her chin and turned her back, lips finding hers again.
Carmen never knew a kiss could melt her like this. Her body seemed to react on its own. Then her phone started ringing in Pearson’s pocket, snapping the tension.
