The show was supposed to be an outdoor survival reality series. They had just arrived at some village when a heavy rainstorm came out of nowhere. Carmen’s luck was truly awful. Not only was she stuck in the middle of a downpour, she got her period and ended up with a nasty viral infection. Her fever climbed to 104, and the shoot was only two days in when the production team had to call an ambulance. No one would call that a good sign.
She was groggy and weak, sprawled out on the hospital bed. She hated needles with a passion, and now she had an IV taped to the back of her hand.
“Carmen, do you want to tell your family? I heard you got married. Don’t you think your husband will worry?”
Carmen had taken time off for her wedding. She hadn’t kept it a secret from anyone at the company.
“I already told him. It’s fine. Simon, you can head back. I’ll be okay on my own. If you really feel bad, just hire a female nurse or assistant for me.”
Carmen might have been raised in comfort, but she wasn’t the type to fall apart just because she was in the hospital alone. The doctor said she needed at least three days of full rest. The fever wouldn’t budge. She felt lightheaded and so tired it was hard to even speak.
“I’ll let Tina stay behind and help take care of you. This is basically a work injury at this point.”
“I really don’t need it.”
She said no so many times that they finally listened, but just to be safe, they hired a young woman to look after her.
Carmen drifted in and out of sleep, barely noticing the phone buzzing beside her pillow. The aide noticed, but let the first call ring out. By the fifth call, she hovered for a moment, ready to wake Carmen. But Carmen looked so exhausted, cheeks pale with dark circles under her eyes, that the aide just couldn’t do it. Instead, she answered for her.
“Hello, the phone’s owner is in the hospital right now. May I ask who’s calling? I’ll let her know to call you back when she wakes up.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line.
