When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 79

“Brody, what are you doing? There are security cameras here...”

Nelly blurted the words, nerves fraying, but Brody just stared at her, his eyes intense, as if he could see straight through her.

He didn’t say anything right away. Nelly tried to pry his fingers off her arm. “You’re hurting me.”

“Did you get your stomach exam results?” Brody asked out of nowhere and finally let go of her.

He had been waiting outside for almost the entire day. The moment he saw her, he’d nearly lost control, but somehow he managed to pull himself together.

Nelly looked at him, confused. “Is that really why you came here?”

Brody stayed silent. His face was cold, and the bright hallway lights made the dark circles under his eyes impossible to miss. He looked completely worn out. For someone who always cared about his appearance, this was a rare sight.

“Let’s go inside. Don’t make a scene out here.”

Nelly slipped past him and opened her door.

Inside, Brody’s eyes immediately landed on the medical report lying unopened on the glass coffee table. He didn’t hesitate, just walked over and tore it open.

Nelly frowned at his behavior, but she didn’t bother stopping him. All he wanted was to see the report anyway.

“Don’t worry. Even if I get sick and die while we’re still married, no one’s going to blame you...”

“I’m not planning to scam you for money or anything,” she muttered, almost to herself.

So much for guilt. She’d spent a lot of his money recently, and now Brody was probably losing sleep over it.

He let out a sharp laugh. “Wow, Nelly, you really know how to put on a show.”

Nelly had just finished kicking off her shoes when she heard him.

“What?”

Brody tossed the report back onto the table, his eyes cold and a little scary. “The results say you’re perfectly healthy. Not even a hint of a stomach problem.”

His voice made it clear he wasn’t happy with any of this.

“So? Isn’t it a good thing that I’m healthy?”

Nelly could tell something wasn’t right. She picked up the report and glanced at it. She couldn’t make sense of the numbers, but the doctor’s note at the bottom said everything was normal and she didn’t need any medication.

“So what’s with the bleeding ulcer and hospital stays? Why are you faking being sick?”

Brody couldn’t hold it in anymore. All her odd behavior over the past few weeks finally seemed to make sense. And yet, she was still acting casual, like nothing was wrong. He almost had to admire her for it.

Nelly finally got it. She understood now why he was here.

“I faked being sick to trick you? Why would I even bother?”
