Selina opened the door and was met by a young, pretty doctor she didn’t recognize.
“Mr. Garland.”
Jessie didn’t bother saying hi to Selina. She looked straight at Brody. As his private medical consultant, she was supposed to check in on him. Honestly, she thought Brody or someone else was the patient, so seeing Sheila lying in the bed caught her off guard.
Jessie’s eyes flicked to Sheila. Sheila started to greet her, but Jessie just turned away, her gaze landing on the mountain of gift bags stacked in the room.
“So many presents. Is it that bad? Planning to stay a whole year?” Jessie’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
Brody answered, calm as ever. “It’s nothing serious. Don’t worry about it.”
“Good, good,” Jessie replied, smiling with a hint of bite. “Some people go through major stuff like stomach ulcers all alone. Usually, the ones who make the biggest fuss don’t actually have anything wrong with them.”
She had no patience for Brody and Sheila together. Since they kept showing up together, she couldn’t help herself from saying something. That one comment was enough to make the whole room tense up.
Selina had no idea what was going on, but sensing Jessie’s obvious connection to Brody, she kept her thoughts to herself.
Jessie suddenly remembered something. “Oh, I mailed Mrs. Garland’s test results back to her. Mr. Garland, since you have so much free time, maybe you should check in on your wife.”
She left without another word. Jessie’s reminder made Brody suddenly remember that when Sheila’s place got smashed, Nelly hadn’t been feeling well. There was no way she had the energy to pull any kind of stunt.
The second Jessie was gone, Brody looked like he was ready to leave too.
Sheila must have noticed because she quickly said, “Brody, you promised me. Don’t go looking for Nelly.”
“I just need to ask her something,” Brody said, not bothering to hide how he felt.
Sheila didn’t want him to start drama for her sake, and honestly, Brody wanted a clean break from Nelly. Still, these questions kept nagging at him, making it impossible to move on.
“I bet that doctor is just covering for Nelly. I’ve known her forever. She’s healthy as can be. If she had a stomach ulcer, I’d know,” Selina blurted out, unable to hold back. “I was with her a lot.”
“Sheila, leave it,” Sheila cut in, but she still glanced at Brody, clearly hesitating.
“Brody, there’s something I’m not sure if I should tell you.”
“Go ahead,” Brody said, watching her.
“When Nelly came to the hospital, I saw her in the hallway with Jessie. They were talking about a test report... and Nelly said something like thank you, and something about making you regret it...” Sheila stared at the floor, looking like she didn’t really want to say more.
Selina immediately caught on. “Mr. Garland, come on. This is classic Nelly. She’s faking sick so you’ll drop Sheila. Now it makes sense why she brought up divorce. She’s just playing some twisted game to get you back.”
