When Nelly explained her plan, Jonah looked genuinely surprised. There was a new spark of admiration in his eyes.
“Father’s been interested in that piece for ages. I didn’t expect you to move faster than him.”
“Really?”
Nelly couldn’t help but grin at the compliment. Her cheeks warmed, and for a second, she forgot what to say. She grabbed a pastry from the table and handed it to Jonah.
“It’s still early. Want something to eat?”
She loved these cute, sugary treats. They made her feel a little lighter, a little happier. But Jonah wasn’t a fan. He frowned without thinking.
That was when Nelly remembered it was already evening.
“Oh, right. You usually skip these when you’re training.”
She started to bring the pastry to her lips, but before she could take a bite, Jonah reached out and took it from her. He popped it in his mouth and finished it in a couple of quick bites.
“My stomach was empty anyway. This helps.”
Nelly blinked, caught off guard. Something about the moment felt strange, but she couldn’t put her finger on it.
Jonah turned to her. “Did you take your meds?”
Nelly hesitated. Jonah just sighed a little and pulled a small bottle from his pocket.
“I took them this morning.”
“Three times a day.”
He didn’t let up. He shook out a pill, handed it to her, and waited. Nelly gave in, picked up her glass, and swallowed it with a gulp of water.
The exhibition started soon after. Nelly took her seat at the display area, Jonah sitting close by.
The host knew how to work a crowd. After a few warm-up jokes, the spotlight quickly landed on Nelly. He introduced her as a special guest.
