After more than two hours of questioning, Sheila’s patience had completely run out. She kept demanding a lawyer, kept asking to talk to Nicholas. Finally, the door swung open and Nicholas walked in with his people.
The moment she saw him, Sheila felt her heart settle. Her eyes went red and glossy. “Mr. Watson…”
Nicholas didn’t show any emotion. He said something quietly to the man next to him, and just like that, they had her out of the room.
It felt just like last time. Nicholas escorted her to a waiting car, silent and serious.
Sheila couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Mr. Watson, what’s happening? Why would Selina turn on me like this?”
He didn’t look at her, just stared out the window at the rain coming down harder, the streetlights blurring into the darkness. His voice was cool and distant. “Someone who betrays a friend once will always choose betrayal again.”
His words stung. Sheila’s chest tightened. Something about Nicholas felt different tonight. He was colder, detached. From the moment he got her out, he’d barely looked at her, hadn’t even acknowledged how upset she was. Even now, what he’d just said felt like it had another meaning underneath.
Sheila’s anxiety grew. Brody had cut her off, the Watson family was recognizing Nelly, and now—was Nicholas about to leave her behind too? After all, he and Nelly were family by blood.
Sheila hugged herself, only just realizing the car wasn’t heading for her place.
“Mr. Watson, where are we going?” Her voice was small.
“It’s not safe for you here. I’m sending you away.”
Sheila’s eyes went wide. “What?”
She barely got the word out before Nicholas interrupted, calm as ever. “Don’t worry. I’ve arranged everything. Even if Selina tries to come after you, she won’t have evidence right away. With me on your side, you can just leave all this behind.”
