The more Nelly thought about it, the more unsettled she felt. In the end, she couldn’t keep it to herself any longer and shared her worries with Jessie. Jessie didn’t hide anything and admitted she’d seen Brody’s medical records. The heart donor’s last name really was Olson. Jessie also explained that a donor must be alive and healthy, so unless it was pure accident or coincidence, someone must have chosen this on purpose.
That revelation left Nelly completely rattled. If Sheila’s father had actually given up his life for Brody, then everything Brody did for Sheila made sense. It meant she’d misjudged him all along. Sitting alone outside the hospital room, Nelly replayed every little memory she had with Brody. He’d always seemed cold, almost distant, and she’d been the only person by his side since they were kids. He wasn’t the best husband, but maybe he wasn’t as heartless as she’d always believed.
Nelly suddenly felt lost. If all she felt was hate, at least she could blame him for her lost years and wasted love. But now, even Brody seemed to care, and she couldn’t pretend not to feel anything anymore. Still, could something this broken ever really be put back together?
Three months later, at the global brand launch, Never took the top spot with overwhelming support. Nelly had fulfilled every condition for her inheritance and was finally ready to sign the agreement. Christopher had arranged for the whole thing to happen publicly at the Watson estate, so there would be reporters and cameras everywhere. Tonight was the night.
Nelly changed into a striking black gown. She looked stunning, confident, completely in her element. Brody watched her from behind, catching her reflection in the mirror, and didn’t even try to hide his admiration. Carrie piped up from the side, “Mommy, you look so pretty today!”
Nelly just laughed and gave Carrie a few kisses, then she and Brody headed out together.
“Congratulations on getting everything you wanted,” Brody said in his deep, steady voice. “Tonight, you’re going to be the most incredible woman in all of Westhaven.”
Getting a compliment from Brody had never been easy, but over the last few months, Nelly had gotten used to it. She could hardly remember how untouchable he used to be around her.
Ever since coming back from their trip, things between her and Brody had gotten so much better. The wall between them was melting away, little by little. Where Nelly used to keep him at arm’s length, now they treated each other with a kind of gentle respect. Brody kept his promise, playing the role of a good husband. He took care of their home, supported Nelly in everything she did at work, and was always there when she needed him.
Nelly had changed too. She was thriving at work, more confident than ever, but she no longer felt the need to always be on guard around Brody. They could go out as a family with Carrie and even shared meals together often. They still had separate rooms, but things felt peaceful.
