When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 436

People from the rescue team had gathered around, and it was clear something was wrong. Nelly hurried over and soon found out what had everyone so anxious. A thirteen-year-old girl was missing.

Her parents had spent the entire day searching for her. Now, they looked like they were about to fall apart. The story came out in pieces. Their daughter’s pet dog had disappeared during the disaster, and every day since, she’d ignored their pleas and gone out hunting for it. Today, she went out and never came back.

She’d searched everywhere nearby except for the cliff just a bit further away. Now, night was falling, and it was too dangerous for the rescue team to go out. They couldn’t even start a search until they got approval from their superiors, which meant nothing would happen before morning.

“If we wait until tomorrow, my daughter won’t survive...” The mother broke down completely, dropping to her knees in front of the rescue team, sobbing and begging.

Her husband tried to keep it together. He saw Nelly and her friends getting ready to leave in their car and rushed over. “You’re good people, bringing us supplies. Please, I’m begging you. All the rescue vehicles are gone. Could you let us use your car? We just want to try looking for our daughter...”

Jessie was already feeling low, and seeing these desperate parents made her heart ache. Teddy caught the look on her face and answered before she could. “You two should stay here and rest. We’ll go check near the cliff. It’s late, the roads are rough, and maybe she just lost her way. We’ll see what we can do.”

Searching the mountains at night wasn’t easy, but asking these parents to just wait and do nothing felt even worse. Jessie nodded right away. “He’s right. You both need to look after yourselves. If something happened to you, it’d only make things harder. We will go.”

When the parents heard Jessie was a doctor and that she would help, they could barely get out their thanks through their tears.

Jessie and Teddy planned to head out to search, and they suggested Nelly and Brody stay behind. Another rescue truck was supposed to come later, so they could leave separately if needed.

But Nelly shook her head. “I’m coming, too. If there’s more of us, we can look out for each other.”

Brody had been quiet all this time, but when it came time to load up, he was the first to get in the car. Nelly frowned, surprised. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“If you’re going, so am I.” His voice was cool, almost gruff. “I can’t just let you go alone.”
