When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 431

He was her ex-husband. Even after their divorce, he just wouldn’t leave her alone, always searching for her, always trying to destroy her life. If Nicholas handed her over to him, it would be a fate worse than death. Sheila didn’t even get a chance to fight back. Nicholas ended the call and the car carrying her sped off, disappearing down the road.

Two days later, Nelly got a message from Michael, calling her back to the old family house early in the morning. There was no mystery about why he wanted her there. The Watson family’s main shares had just changed hands, and Michael, of course, wanted to have a say.

By the time Nelly arrived, Nicholas was already there with Britney and some others. Felix was grinning from ear to ear, making it clear that the victory was completely in Nelly’s favor. Britney looked furious. The moment Nelly walked in, she spun on her heel and stormed out.

Nicholas had switched sides for good, and there was nothing Britney could do about it. No matter how much she hated Nelly, the tables had turned. Still, she couldn’t believe how unfair life was. Christopher had fought tooth and nail for his place in the family, and now, even after his death, his daughter turned out to be just as tough.

Michael called Nelly over and asked about the recent rumors and public opinion. He spoke kindly, but it was just for show. Now that everyone in the Watson family had accepted Nelly and Michael was getting older, he knew it was time to start handing over the reins.

Nicholas had promised his full support. Felix stood firmly behind her too. Nelly wasn’t the type to be used by anyone. Even as a woman, she was more than capable of leading the family. And as Nicholas had pointed out, Garland Inc.’s boss seemed pretty interested in Nelly these days, which only added to her resources.

Looking at the big picture, Michael valued Nelly as much as he once valued Christopher. He even offered to help her get back at Rudy. The Chandler family’s company had always depended on Watson support, so its leader had to answer to them. Rudy had lost all control over the company. He’d just been punished by the family and was now lying in bed, recovering. Michael promised Nelly that as soon as Rudy healed, he’d be sent away from Westhaven for good.

Everything was falling into place, but Nelly felt almost nothing about it. After living through so many family fights, she realized that chasing fame and power only made people numb. She knew there was no way she could go back to the person she once was, someone who simply followed her heart.
