Just then, a housekeeper rushed in, breathless. “There are reporters everywhere outside.”
Michael’s brow furrowed. Britney jumped in, “Dad, are you really going to let this happen?”
Felix finally spoke up, his voice calm. “Sir, I think the younger generation should handle their own problems. Besides, I trust Nelly. She can take care of herself.”
That gave Michael the perfect excuse. He gripped his cane and glanced at the staff next to him. “Go get things ready. The reception room on the second floor should be good.”
“Dad!” Britney tried to stop him, but it was obvious things were out of her hands now.
With Michael’s order, the staff scurried off to deal with the reporters. The other board members were quietly sent out the back, leaving only Britney and Felix behind.
Britney looked completely outnumbered. She wanted to say something more, but Nicholas clearly had no interest in getting involved. He met her pleading eyes, then walked out without hesitation.
He had warned her before: no matter what she wanted to do to Nelly, she couldn’t risk hurting the Watson family. Britney clearly hadn’t listened.
Still refusing to give up, Britney tried again to talk to Michael, but Jonah stepped in her way.
“If you have something to say, maybe you should go home and talk it over with Rudy. Right now, we need to calm things down and figure out who’s really behind this.”
Jonah’s voice was steady and just loud enough for everyone to hear.
Britney’s face turned bright red. “Jonah? Who do you think you are, talking to me like that?”
Jonah just gave her a small smile and stayed quiet.
