Even though she came from such a powerful family, Nelly never bragged about it. That only made everyone like her more and wonder about her. All the compliments and curiosity made Carrie the center of attention at preschool too. Carrie loved every minute of it. She was naturally proud and loved showing off, so when her classmates started crowding around her, telling her how cool her mom was, she could barely contain her excitement.
As soon as she saw Nelly, Carrie ran up and hugged her tight, bursting with stories from her day.
“Mom, everyone says you’re amazing. I think so too! I heard the Watson family is super rich. They’re not just big in Westhaven, they’re one of the top families in the whole country. Is that true?”
Nelly just smiled awkwardly.
“They’re exaggerating.”
“But being an heiress to billions is a huge deal, right?” That was all Carrie had heard about all day. She looked up at Nelly, her eyes shining. “If you’re the heiress, doesn’t that mean I’ll be one too?”
Carrie didn’t even try to hide how thrilled she was. Nelly just tapped her on the forehead and laughed.
“It’s true, but to actually inherit everything and run the family business, you have to be qualified. Even I might not get picked.”
“Qualified? What does that mean?”
“You have to be able to handle the family’s responsibility. You need to know how to make money, learn a ton, get through tough times, and become a better version of yourself.”
Nelly said it lightly, but Carrie’s face turned serious. She might not have understood every word, but she nodded earnestly, her eyes full of admiration.
“Okay, then I’ll work hard and be an even better person!”
