When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 406

Nelly met Britney’s eyes with steady calm, every word she spoke landing with weight and clarity.

“Nelly, you…”

Britney, clearly offended, was just about to assert her authority as the elder in the room. But Nelly didn’t give her the chance. She turned to Michael instead.

“Grandpa, before you start blaming me, shouldn’t we find out who leaked the story? I’ve always kept my identity a secret. So who could have found out about my marriage, and then made it sound even worse with all those details? Whoever did this clearly has it out for us. They want to cause trouble in our family and hurt everyone’s interests.”

Britney’s face shifted instantly. “Nelly, stop trying to change the subject. This is all your fault! Do you really think you can just dodge the consequences?”

“When have I ever tried to dodge anything? I’ve already said it’s my fault to keep my personal life a secret. But that had nothing to do with the family’s interests. I just wanted to handle it myself so I could focus on helping the Watson family. If someone hadn’t deliberately targeted me with these leaks, none of this would be happening. My success is the family’s success. We’re all in this together.”

Nelly stood her ground. She spoke with so much certainty and logic that it was hard to argue with her. The shareholders who’d been so furious just moments ago now looked uncertain, their anger cooling into thoughtful silence.
