Brody stayed quiet for what felt like forever. Finally, he gave a tired, crooked smile and said to Alan, “Didn’t you hear what she said? Just take it over.”
Alan blinked, a little stunned. “Oh, yes, right. I’ll take care of it now.” He didn’t even stop to breathe, just grabbed the things and hurried out of the room.
Nelly watched him go, her smile fading as her eyes turned cold. Alan was just another guy trying to keep his job, she knew that. He’d spent years sucking up to Brody, never caring about anyone else’s feelings. She could almost understand it. Still, he was the idiot who’d helped Sheila go after her daughter. She wasn’t about to forget that.
When Alan was gone, Brody’s voice dropped. “Does that make you feel better?”
Nelly turned to face him, arms folded tight across her chest. “Brody, what are you even talking about? I’m just looking out for your employee, and for you. Shouldn’t you thank me for this?” She tilted her head, her voice all innocent and sweet.
Brody’s jaw tightened. “You’re just mad because I stood up for Sheila last time. I was angry, too, you know…”
“You’re right, I am mad,” Nelly shot back before she could stop herself. “Because you don’t know right from wrong. I don’t care if you love Sheila, but I’ll never forgive her for what she did to our daughter.”
Brody’s whole face changed, his eyes narrowing as he caught the edge in her words. “What did you just say?”
Nelly felt her heart drop. She couldn’t tell him about Sheila’s dirty tricks now. If Brody found out, he’d probably cut Sheila off completely, just to get custody of their daughter. That would put Nelly at a huge disadvantage when the divorce finally happened.
Right then, Carrie ran over, clinging to Nelly’s waist. “Mom, please don’t be mad, okay? Daddy was nice today. Can’t you two just not fight?”
Carrie’s little face was scrunched up, her eyes shining with tears. She’d hoped her parents would get along, just a little, maybe even go back to how things used to be, since her dad had made dinner and her mom had eaten it.
Nelly brushed Carrie’s hair back and took a deep breath.
Brody said, “Carrie, go back to your room. Mom and I need to talk.”
