When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 352

The truth was, Carrie was just five years old. And unlike Nelly, Carrie could dream about anything she wanted, as big or as wild as she could imagine.

“Because you draw so beautifully, Mommy. I want to draw with you.”

Nelly melted at her daughter's sweet voice. She reached out and gently smoothed Carrie’s hair. “Okay,” she said with a soft smile.

Two hours passed before Brody finally finished the menu Nelly had given him. He’d never cooked before, but after following the step-by-step videos online, the food actually looked pretty decent.

He stood there for a minute, fork in hand, debating whether he should even try his own cooking. Normally, Brody was confident about everything he did, sometimes a little too confident. But this was different. Cooking made him nervous in a way nothing else did.

He took a bite. The taste was… well, bland. Everything tasted more or less the same. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t good either. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

Brody frowned and thought about how to fix it, but all he could come up with was adding a little more salt. He glanced down at his watch and took off his apron. His shirt was sticking to his back, soaked with sweat.

“Dinner’s ready! Carrie, Nelly, come help set the table.”

He called out as he started carrying the dishes over. After spending so long in the kitchen, he figured they must be starving by now. The thought made him a little uneasy. He never realized how complicated cooking could be. Just washing and chopping everything had taken over an hour.

At one point, he’d even thought about calling Alan to bring Marian over to help, but he’d already promised Nelly he’d do it himself, so he stuck with it until the end.

But when he called them, the apartment stayed quiet.

He put out all the dishes, set the plates and silverware, but still, no one came.
