When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 335

She couldn’t push Brody away right now. All she could do was grab onto the front of his shirt, clinging tight. Brody looked down at her with a low, teasing voice. “Told you, this kind of scene just isn’t for you.”

“I…” Nelly was so close to swearing at him. Whether she belonged here or not, it was none of his business. Why was he always there, impossible to shake off?

To her shock, as Brody turned with her in his arms, the whole crowd started to cheer. He was just wearing a plain white shirt, but he looked amazing, tall and striking, almost like a model. And Nelly, swept up in his arms, was in this vintage dark green dress, the skirt billowing around her. She somehow looked like some runaway princess. Somehow, this whole mess only made the brand’s design stand out more.

Backstage, Nelly didn’t even bother with Brody. She rushed off to get changed. Glancing in the mirror, she saw her face had turned bright red. The second Brody picked her up, his scent surrounded her. It was familiar and strange all at once.

The show was almost over, and Nancy still hadn’t shown up. As Nelly stepped out in her last outfit, she heard people in the audience whispering, wondering where Nancy was. Nancy was supposed to be the headliner for never tonight, her promo posters plastered at the entrance. She was only kind of famous in France, and most people were here for the brand, but if she didn’t show, there’d be a contract mess and a wave of bad press online.

Nelly slipped backstage again as the last models were still walking. This was it, the final round. The event was basically done. If Nancy didn’t make it, Nelly would probably have to get on stage and apologize to everyone.

“Nelly!” A familiar voice suddenly broke through the noise. Nelly glanced up and saw Nancy, rushing in with a staff member leading the way. Her hair was a mess, her makeup smudged and streaky, making her look almost dirty. She wore a plain brown dress, and only her jacket was from never—a sharp, post-apocalyptic piece in earthy tones.

Nancy knew there was no time. She didn’t even stop to talk, just tried to make a beeline for the dressing room, but everyone was frozen, not sure what to do. Only a few minutes left before the finale. There was no way she could redo her hair and makeup or change her clothes in time.
