When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 296

“Yeah, I’m crazy. If you won’t let me see my daughter, trust me, I can do something even crazier.”

Nelly was done playing nice. Some people only learned the hard way.

She pulled out her phone, her voice cold and flat. “We’re not even divorced yet. If you keep me from seeing my daughter, I’ll have to call the police.”

“And Brody, about your injury… I bet the Garland Inc. shareholders have no clue. Right?” She paused, eyes sharp. “Or about your heart condition?”

Nelly didn’t hesitate. She aimed straight for his most vulnerable spots.

There hadn’t been a single rumor about Brody being in the hospital. Nelly knew the truth behind his years of workaholism. It wasn’t just about ambition or greed. He’d worked himself to the bone for that position, knowing just how hard it was to secure.

Every wealthy family was the same. Whoever took over the business had to survive surrounded by wolves. Brody had fought for every inch, finally taking the reins from his father and grabbing hold of Garland Inc. with both hands.

After she found out about his heart problem, Nelly understood even better why he clung to the company like it was his lifeline.

He must have been cast aside as a kid, too.

“Nelly, don’t do this to Brody…” Sheila’s voice cut in, shaky. “He’s like this because of you. How could you threaten him like that?”

Sheila sounded desperate. She looked genuinely shocked that Nelly would go there—like she’d lost all sense of loyalty or love.

And how did Nelly know about Brody’s heart?

Now, Nelly was calm. She wasn’t the same woman Sheila remembered. Every word out of her mouth hit right where it hurt the most.

Brody glared at her. He felt ice creeping through his chest, but somehow, the corner of his mouth still twitched up in a bitter smile.

“Nelly, you want to see Carrie? Fine. I’ll take you.”
