“What did you just say?” Nelly stopped in her tracks, then let out a laugh. “Sheila, do you just love drama or what? There’s this reality show that’s super popular right now. You should try out. Forget being a comic artist. You’d be a hit as an actress.”
Sheila didn’t even blink at Nelly’s teasing. She just pressed on, “I know you’re really unhappy right now.”
“Me? Unhappy? What do I have to be unhappy about?” Nelly sighed, feeling her energy drain away. Sheila showing up at her door this late at night was the last straw. She couldn’t stay here anymore. Tomorrow, she’d tell Jonah she was moving out.
“Carrie leans on me a lot, but honestly, I’m the one who insisted on taking her out. She misses you. She’s been miserable since you left. She’s still not over the kidnapping thing. She can’t stay down like this for too long. That’s why Mrs. Garland asked me to hang out with her…”
“Are you finished? Get out of my way.” Nelly’s voice was cold as ice. She tried to shove Sheila aside.
But Sheila kept holding the elevator door open, refusing to let it close no matter how many times Nelly hit the button.
“Nelly, don’t be so stubborn. Brody is willing to make up for Carrie’s sake. You’re a mother. You should appreciate that!”
Sheila was getting more ridiculous by the second. Nelly rolled her eyes. “Appreciate what, exactly?”
“Appreciate your rights as her mother!” Sheila’s voice got louder, sharper, cutting through the air. “The Garland family is never going to let you have Carrie. If you go through with the divorce, you’ll end up separated from her. Can you really stand that?”
Nelly let out a bitter laugh. “Of course I can’t. But I’m still getting a divorce. And Ms. Olson, you deserve an award for this performance. Honestly, you and Brody are the perfect pair. So quit showing up here trying to get my attention, alright?”
She took a deep breath, forced a smile, and pushed Sheila away.
