When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 276

An hour later, the elevator doors slid open and Nelly stepped out, heading straight for the VIP suite at the end of the hallway. She barely made it halfway before two unfamiliar bodyguards blocked her way.

They didn’t know who she was, so they stopped her right there. “You can’t go in.”

“I’m here to see Brody. Where’s Alan?” Nelly asked, a little confused. Alan was usually guarding the door with his team. Today felt off.

The bodyguards exchanged a glance, then one of them answered after a pause. “Alan’s off today. Mrs. Garland asked us to watch the door and not let anyone disturb Mr. Garland.”

So, these were Tina’s people. Nelly put it all together. She kept her expression calm. “Alright, then just let Brody know I came by.”

She handed over the get-well gift she’d brought, quick and businesslike. If Tina didn’t want her around, that worked out just fine. It meant she didn’t have to feel guilty about Brody’s injury anymore.

The two bodyguards hesitated, and before they could say anything, the hospital room door suddenly opened.

“Carrie, what do you want for dinner? Should we go to that burger place again? You said you loved it last time.” Sheila’s voice floated down the hallway.

Nelly looked up and saw Sheila walking toward her, holding Carrie’s little hand. As soon as Carrie spotted her mom, she let go of Sheila and called out, shy and a little nervous, “Mom.”

The bodyguards heard this and quickly stepped aside. “You’re Mr. Garland’s wife?”

“Ms. Stewart,” Sheila’s face went stiff for a split second, then she forced a warm smile. “Why don’t you go in? Brody’s awake, and Mrs. Garland is inside too.”
