When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 272

Jonah noticed the little wrinkle between her brows as she slept. He reached out, wanting to smooth it away, but stopped short, afraid even the gentlest touch might wake her. If he’d known how rough this trip to the Capital would be on her, he never would have let her go alone. He swallowed hard, his own brow furrowing with worry.

He slipped off his jacket and draped it over Nelly, then quietly adjusted the seat so she could lie back a bit more comfortably. When she shifted, Jonah held his breath, heart thudding. She didn’t wake. Instead, she just relaxed, curling onto her side and settling in even deeper.

Nelly slept straight through to morning. It was the kind of sleep that left no dreams behind, just deep, peaceful rest. When she finally opened her eyes, she was back in her own place. She sat up slowly, most of the exhaustion from the day before already gone. Her memory, though, was fuzzy after leaving Nicholas’s house. The last thing she remembered was heading home with Jonah. She must have fallen asleep in the car and he’d brought her up.

She glanced down automatically to check her clothes. Still the same as last night. Relieved, she hurried to the shower, trying to shake off the lingering heaviness. The second she finished getting ready, her phone started ringing nonstop. From Felix. From the office. From Clients. She barely had time to breathe between calls.

Felix already knew Nicholas had let her go. He sounded surprised, but mostly relieved. With Nicholas out of the way, at least for now, the rest of the Watson family probably wouldn’t bother her.

Nelly couldn’t stand how Felix kept his distance, always watching from the sidelines. She brushed him off with a couple of polite answers and hung up. After everything that happened, she was starting to question why Felix ever helped in the first place. If it was all about his friendship with Christopher, like he said, he wouldn’t have dropped her so easily. The truth was, he was just using her.

As soon as she got to the office, she barely looked up from her work until late afternoon. The news about Nicholas spread fast, and clients who’d canceled before were suddenly open to renegotiating. All it took was a bit of effort on Nelly’s part to get them back. This time, she decided to move the press conference up, hoping to buy the company a little more time.
