A staff hurried over and whispered something to Nicholas. His smile faded right away, and impatience flickered across his face. He waved the staff off, then turned to April, who was still lost in her puzzle.
“Daddy has to go take care of something. Why don’t you let the nanny help you to your room and get some rest, okay?”
April looked up, clearly not ready to stop. She glanced down at the puzzle and mumbled, “I’m not sleepy yet.”
It was already late. Back when she lived with Victoria, April never dared to ask for more time to play. But now, Nicholas would let her do as she pleased and spoil her to the core. she finally felt brave enough to speak up.
Nicholas smiled and ruffled her hair. “Alright, you can play a little longer. I’ll come get you when it’s time for bed.”
April’s face brightened with a huge smile, and she nodded right away.
April’s happiness put Nicholas in a good mood. The smile still lingered on his face even as he walked into the sitting room to meet Nelly and Jonah.
“It’s late. Is there something important you need?” he asked, motioning for a servant to bring tea.
He glanced at Nelly, noticing how tired she looked. Her clothes were a bit messy, her energy clearly drained. In contrast, Jonah was perfectly put together, his suit crisp and neat.
“Uncle Nicholas, you know why we are here. The time we agreed on has come,” Nelly said, stepping forward. She placed an envelope in front of him, Ben’s handwritten letter she had carried all the way back from the Underground.
Nicholas picked up the letter, raising an eyebrow at them. “What’s this?”
