When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 252

“Thank you, Jude.” Nelly nodded, worry clouding her eyes.

Jude smiled and gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “Just doing what I should. Really.”

As they headed back, Nelly couldn’t help but bring up her mother again. Out of all the mysteries in the Underground City, what mattered most to her was the story between Judy and Christopher.

Seeing how curious she was, Jude decided not to hold anything back.

Years ago, no one really knew why, but Michael Watson kicked Christopher out of the family. Christopher, proud and sharp as ever, wasn’t the type to give up. He used his connections to find his way to the Underground City.

Most people ended up there because they had no other choice. Christopher was different. He came to change his fate.

From the moment he entered the casino, he made himself a promise. He was going to beat the house.

The game worked the same way back then. You had to win your way up from D-block to A-block. If you made it, you’d get a seat at the table with the house itself. Winning meant you could walk away with half the casino’s fortune.

But Christopher didn’t have Nelly’s luck. He kept losing, fast, and before long he was so deep in debt he almost lost everything, even his own organs.

That was when Judy stepped in and saved him.

Judy had noticed him the very first time he played. He was tall, handsome, and everything about him, from the way he dressed to the way he spoke, made him stand out.

His first game was at Judy’s table. She wore a half-lace mask, her posture elegant, her presence impossible to ignore.

Christopher was quick on his feet. As long as Judy wasn’t rigging the game, he just kept winning. He played all night and couldn’t lose.

The casino rarely saw a man like him, so Judy let him be.
