When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 246

“It’s you…”

Nelly’s voice came out in a rough whisper. She could barely hear herself.

It was the man who had saved her and Brody back at the casino.

He stepped forward, carrying water and food himself. Someone next to him held a plain tray with a glass of warm water and a bowl of clear broth.

“Eat something.”

His voice, filtered through some kind of modulator, sounded cold and mechanical, but there was a gentleness underneath.

Nelly didn’t reach for the tray. She just stared at his mask, her gaze unwavering. “Do we know each other?”

Something about his build, the way he stood, felt so familiar. Still, she couldn’t match him to anyone she actually knew. He gave off this overwhelming, almost frightening presence, and yet he was a complete stranger.

Maybe she was just desperate, hoping he was someone sent by Gregory, someone who could help. Maybe she was just imagining things.

The man paused and bowed his head a little. The mask gave nothing away.

For a while, neither of them said anything. Then the person behind him left, so it was just the two of them in the room. He held out the glass of water to her.

Nelly clenched her jaw. When he offered her the glass, she suddenly reached out and grabbed his hand.

“Is he alive?”

The man’s body tensed. Nelly’s voice shook with worry. She could only be talking about Brody, who might still be in danger.

After a long moment, the man finally replied, “Yeah. He’s fine.”

“You said you came to save us?” Nelly kept staring at him. Her voice was ragged. “Who are you?”

“You don’t need to know who I am. In a place like this, no one uses their real name.”

His answer was cool, the mechanical voice making him sound even more distant.

Still, as she watched him, Nelly couldn’t shake that weird feeling, like she almost recognized him.
