When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 243

“The boss sees everything. He never gets it wrong,” the dealer said, his voice gentle, almost apologetic.

He glanced at the one-way mirror where the tall, shadowy figure stood in the dim light, perfectly still.

“We all follow the rules here. You have to catch someone in the act. If he wants to play games, he shouldn’t use my place to… push people around.”

The reply came in a weird, mechanical tone, cold and flat, but somehow it made the air heavy.

“What do you mean by that…” the dealer started, but a command crackled through his earpiece, cutting him off.

He froze, then turned to the men crowding around Nelly, his words reluctant. “Let her go.”

At that, the men lowered their guns and moved aside.

The room shifted under the black-clad men’s control. The masked man shoved past the dealer and walked straight toward Nelly.

The dealer wanted to stop him, but someone behind the masked man lifted a hand, and the dealer just stopped in his tracks.

Nobody dared get in the masked man’s way.

He stopped right in front of Nelly.

She wore a long dress, her skin streaked with blood. She was cradling a man in her arms, a man who looked lifeless. Not a single tear rolled down her face, but every part of her seemed to crackle with despair and fury.

The masked man reached for her hand. Suddenly, a gun pressed to his neck. Nelly had raised it in a flash, her movements sharp and practiced, like she’d been waiting for this second all along.

She glared at the face behind the mask. The innocence in her eyes was gone, replaced by something hard and dangerous.

Nelly knew that mask. She’d seen it on her first day at the bar, worn by the bartender. If she was right, the man standing in front of her was either the boss of the casino or someone even higher up.
