When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 237

The woman pried Nelly’s fingers open, then immediately looked at the dealer in charge.

He looked just as shocked. His eyes flicked from Nelly to Brody, then back to the one-way mirror behind him. For a moment, he seemed lost for words.

Nelly finally took a long breath. Her voice rang out, sharp and a little mocking. “So, are you satisfied now?”

“What did you do?”

The dealer, who only moments ago had acted so calm and refined, dropped the act completely. His voice turned sharp as he locked eyes with Brody. As soon as the words left his mouth, the men behind Brody shoved him down, forcing him to his knees.

Brody’s knees hit the floor so hard he almost cried out, but he gritted his teeth and held it in. He would never give these people the satisfaction of seeing him show pain.

“What did you do?” the dealer demanded again, his gaze now fixed on Nelly.

Someone grabbed Nelly’s wrists, spreading her hands flat and pinning them to the table. They searched both her and Brody from head to toe, quick and rough. Nothing. Not a single card anywhere.

“You’d better tell the truth. If you don’t, your hands, and him…” The dealer stared at Nelly, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “Neither of you will walk away from this.”

Suddenly, a combat knife slammed into the table next to Nelly’s hand. The shock of it sent a jolt through her, and she squeezed her eyes shut.

Brody tried to look at her, worry all over his face, but someone forced his head down so hard it hit the corner of the table. Cold metal pressed against his temple—a gun.

“What do you even want from us?” Nelly’s voice shook with anger. “If you can’t find anything, you just beat us until we confess? You have people’s lives in your hands, you run your little black market, and you still can’t stand to lose? This isn’t fair!”

The room went dead silent for a few seconds. Then Nelly snapped her eyes open. She started to thrash and yell, reckless and wild, but the grip on her was too strong. She could barely move.

The dealer watched her, saw she wasn’t scared. He yanked the knife out of the table and drove it down, aiming for the space between her fingers.
