When she came back, she handed one over to Brody. He was in a bad mood and barely glanced at it. “I don’t want that.”
“There are a ton of food stalls over there. If you want something else, go buy it yourself.”
Nelly knew Brody was picky. Junk food like this wasn’t even on his radar. Still, she’d picked up enough for both of them, just in case. At least here, no matter how overpriced everything was, they could afford it. They weren’t like those poor souls who’d lost everything and couldn’t even scrape together enough for instant noodles.
She gave Brody a few chips, then took her own noodles and found a quiet spot to eat. She needed some time to figure out how to find Ben.
But before she could even finish her meal, Brody swooped in and took her noodles. The next thing she knew, he shoved a box of barbecued pork and rice into her hands.
Brody’s voice came from above her. “There’s nothing healthy here. You’re way too skinny these days. Eat some meat.”
“I don’t want meat, I just want my noodles...” Nelly stared at the cup, terrified he’d throw it away. That thing cost a hundred bucks here.
But before she could finish protesting, Brody had already started eating. He took huge bites, finishing it off in no time and even slurping down the last bit of broth. They hadn’t eaten much since yesterday, so he probably was starving. He sure made it look good.
Watching this man—always so put together, always acting like he was above it all—standing there, shoveling instant noodles into his mouth without a care, Nelly felt something twist inside her. It was almost like that old ache she used to feel for him.
She’d grown up scraping by with her mom. Brody hadn’t. She always knew they were from different worlds, so when she first fell for him, she just wanted to protect him. She wanted to let this pampered prince stay arrogant, stay cold, stay true to himself.
But now... Looking back, she realized that when feelings get too deep, even the best intentions start to change. Brody could be a nightmare, but she wasn’t the naive girl she used to be either.
When she saw Brody sneakily wiping his mouth and licking his lips after finishing the noodles, Nelly couldn’t help but laugh.
