When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 225

“You’re worried about me? Brody, save it. You can tell that story to someone else, but do you honestly think I’d buy it?”

“Why wouldn’t you?” Brody’s voice was low, edged with annoyance. “I’m here because I’m worried about you.”

“Brody, can you just drop the act? Stop pretending you care about me for Carrie’s sake. What you really can’t stand is losing control. You hate that someone who used to beg for your attention doesn’t need you anymore. You’re selfish and cold, and that possessiveness of yours is on;ly gonna work on Sheila.”

Nelly’s whole day had already gone sideways, and now that anger bubbled up with Brody right in the crosshairs. Her words flew out, sharp and fast.

“I’m fake? Selfish and cold? Possessive?” Brody hadn’t realized she thought so little of him. For a moment, he just stood there, silent, unsure how to defend himself.

It felt like nothing he said would matter to her anyway.

Nelly rolled her eyes. “Tell me I’m wrong.”

Brody was caught somewhere between anger and frustration. All those emotions just sat heavy in his chest, with nowhere to go. It left him feeling completely powerless.

After a long pause, he managed to steady himself, his voice even. “No.”

“Whatever. Say whatever you want. You could even tell me you’re in love with me now, and I still wouldn’t care.”

Even now, in the middle of all this mess, they were still arguing. Nelly was starting to wonder what the point even was.

She turned to leave, but Brody grabbed her, finally losing his patience. He pushed her gently but firmly against the wall.

“Fine. I’ll say it. I do love you, Nelly.”

Nelly stared at him, stunned for a few seconds. Then, out of nowhere, she burst out laughing.

Did he really just say he loved her?

Was he really so desperate to win the fight that he’d say something that ridiculous?

“What’s so funny?” Brody’s brow furrowed. “You don’t believe me?”

“Brody, did you just say you love me?”
