“Gregory, just spit it out already.” Nelly’s voice was tense with impatience. Gregory still hesitated, his brows pulled together as he thought it over, silent for a long time before finally speaking up.
“There’s a hidden underground casino in the Capital. People call it the Underground City.”
It was the only truly lawless, messy place in the whole country, tucked away where no one could see. Getting in was close to impossible. It was like the dark web. Unless you had some special connection, you didn’t stand a chance. Only two types of people ever went in: the ruthless and the ones who were about to be eaten alive. And once you got inside, getting out was a whole other problem.
Gregory said, “If Ben really is hiding there, it’ll be nearly impossible to find him. The Underground City’s full of dangerous people and tangled alliances. Forget the Watson family. Even government officials don’t just waltz in.”
He paused, then added, “Honestly, you should just drop it. It’s messy and way too dangerous. You don’t have to get mixed up in this.”
He glanced at Nelly, half-expecting her to back down. When she fell quiet, he let out a breath, relieved.
But then Nelly looked up. “Gregory, you know how to get into the Underground City, don’t you?”
Gregory had just taken a sip of water and nearly choked, coughing and sputtering. Nelly quickly passed him a napkin.
“Wait, are you even listening?” Gregory said, dabbing at his mouth. “That place is no joke. You’d be on your own, and there’s a real chance you wouldn’t make it out. Why are you risking your life for someone who doesn’t even matter to you?”
“I want to try,” Nelly said softly. She looked down, blinking, but there wasn’t a hint of fear in her eyes.
Gregory almost laughed. He never imagined the little girl who used to cry so easily would turn out this fearless.
“So you really want to inherit the family fortune that much?”
