“Huh?” Nancy’s question threw her off for a second.
“I mean, I guess I like him? But just as family. He’s always been good to me.”
Nancy just snorted. “You never really know someone. Jonah doesn’t do anything unless there’s something in it for him. I’m telling you, you should be careful.”
“I know you don’t like him because of Felix, but I really think Jonah’s a good person...” Nelly tried to smooth things over, but before she could finish, Nancy was giving her this pitying look.
“Nelly, you keep your guard up with Felix, but you should be even more careful with Jonah. He’s way more calculating than Felix ever could be.”
Nelly was stunned. Nancy didn’t bother to explain further. When Nelly tried to press her for more, Nancy was already walking into a clothing store, ready to try on outfits.
Nelly realized she was going to dinner with Jonah soon, so she hurried off to pick out a tie for him. It’d make a good gift for later.
After shopping, the two of them stopped at a café nearby and ordered some drinks. Nelly waved a server over. As soon as the waitress came over and their eyes met, the little ordering device in her hand slipped and clattered to the ground.
The server looked completely flustered as she bent down to pick it up, but Nelly beat her to it, handing it over gently.
“Selina.” Nelly said her name softly.
Selina froze. Her face went stiff with embarrassment as she snatched the device back and shuffled to the side, silent.
“Someone you know?” Nancy shot Nelly a glance.
Nelly looked away. “An old friend. Not anymore.”
Nancy didn’t ask anything else. Just from the way Nelly’s face changed, it was obvious things weren’t good between them.
After Selina left the company, she couldn’t find a job anywhere. It was like the whole industry wanted nothing to do with her. Sheila barely answered her calls. Her credit cards were maxed out. She was barely scraping by.
But why? Why did Nelly get to sit there in designer clothes, drinking coffee like she didn’t have a care in the world? Selina stood off to the side, biting her lip, burning with jealousy. Nelly got dumped by Brody, didn’t she? So how was it that she still seemed to be doing better than her?
Soon enough, Nelly finished ordering and Selina left their table. When the coffee arrived, it was brought by someone else.
