Madeline’s heart was too soft… she’d never just walk away.

But his job was to keep her safe. He couldn’t risk bringing any more trouble to her door.

Luke was in the study with Jordan for over an hour. When Jordan finally walked out, his face looked as tense as ever. Everything Luke said was true. Time was running out.

Jordan felt stuck in the middle. First it was Casey, now Luke. Both of them had sworn him to secrecy, asked him to keep things from Madeline. None of them stopped to think about what would happen when she found out on her own. All that guilt… it would crush her.

Casey’s missing finger, Luke’s poisoning… Madeline would carry those scars with her forever.

She stood up abruptly and headed straight over. “Jordan, how is he? Is there a cure for the poison?”

Jordan almost shook his head, but then he remembered Luke’s desperate plea. He changed his answer. “There is, but it’ll take a little while. I need to keep him here while we work through it. Once the poison’s out of his system, he can go home.”

Jordan’s lie sounded completely smooth. Relief softened Madeline’s anxious face. “As long as he’s going to recover, that’s all I care about. Thank you, Jordan. If you need anything, just let me know.”

“Of course. Don’t worry.”

Luke gave her an easy smile. “Don’t worry about me. Once I’m better, I’ll come home.”

“Work with Jordan and do what he says,” she told him.

“I promise,” Luke said, meeting her eyes with an earnest look.

Casey stayed quiet, lounging on the couch, his eyes narrowing just a little.

Madeline kept them company until noon. She had to get back to work, and Jordan wanted to get started with Luke’s treatment. On her way out, Luke called after her.

“Madeline…”
