Carter leaned in, curiosity getting the best of him. “Miss, have you come up with a plan for Madeline?”
Claire smiled a little, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. “I have. Now it’s just a matter of seeing which one he cares about more, himself or Madeline.”
“But Miss, with all due respect, that kid's loyalty runs deep. He’d die before betraying Madeline.”
That made Claire pause. She thought for a moment before speaking. “Then let’s make sure Madeline finds out he’s been poisoned.”
“Why?”
“Because she’s too kind for her own good. She won’t just leave him to die.”
Sometimes, being too soft-hearted could be dangerous.
A sharp light flashed in Claire’s eyes. She propped her chin on her hand and let out a cold chuckle. The antidote was right here with her. No matter if Madeline came for it or the boy did, Claire would make sure Madeline never left.
…
Back at the house, Madeline grabbed her medical kit and went straight to Luke’s room. She couldn’t get rid of the poison entirely, but she could at least slow it down, buy him a little more time.
Julian’s jaw was set, his whole face tight with tension. He barely needed to say a word for everyone to feel the storm brewing around him.
Noah and Oliver heard them come in and bolted down the stairs. “Daddy, where’s Mommy?”
“She’s with Luke,” Julian replied, his voice low and stiff, practically dripping jealousy.
Noah and Oliver looked up at him, their big, round eyes full of curiosity. Oliver tipped his head, all mischief. “Daddy, you seem upset. Is Mommy ignoring you again?”
“This is grown-up stuff.”
Oliver pulled a face and looked away. “Well I don’t want to meddle anyway. You can sulk all you want.”
Julian glared, speechless. What sulking? He wasn’t sulking. Was he?
“Let’s go find Mommy,” the boys cheered, not even glancing back at Julian as they dashed off.
Julian’s mood darkened even more. Miles, still standing nearby, shrank a little, not daring to lift his gaze.
