"I'll try my best."
Emily pressed her lips together, her eyes serious. "If J is willing to back down, I'll step away from Storm."
She had barely finished when her phone rang. It was Charlotte, telling her not to go anywhere and to stay put at the company.
"Okay," Emily said, still puzzled but agreeing anyway.
As she put her phone away, she bumped right into Adela. Adela stood there in a white dress with her long hair down, looking almost blindingly pure. That look on her face, though, was all about scheming and challenge.
Emily didn't bother to acknowledge her. She just took the jacket Pam handed over and headed straight for her dressing room.
Adela noticed Emily's grim expression and smirked. So, Emily was out of moves now? Did they really think pulling strings at the broadcasting authority was that easy?
"I just heard Emily talking to J on the phone. J’s coming to the office," Adela said, flicking her hair back, her lips curling into a sly smile. "Think she’s gonna cave?"
"The director’s already put her on notice," her agent replied with a soft smile. "Why else would she call J here if she wasn’t ready to give in? Go relax for a bit. They might want to see you when they get here."
After all, Kemp was Adela’s father. Anyone needing his help had to go through her first.
Adela let out a scoff. The memory of J’s insults flickered through her mind, but the sting had faded, replaced by pure satisfaction. "Told you," she said crisply, "she’d end up begging me." She couldn't wait to see who else would try to go up against her next.
She frowned a little, casting a backward glance at Kenneth’s office before lowering her eyes and walking away.

A little while later, Charlotte showed up at Apex Mediaworks.
"Charlotte, I got you some milk, fruit, and snacks," Emily said, everything already waiting by the couch. She'd even swapped out the pillow for a softer one.
Charlotte gave her a gentle smile, rifled through the snacks, and asked seriously, "Do you have anything spicy?"
"Spicy?" Emily’s eyes lit up and she dropped her voice. "All I’ve got is Flamin' Hot Cheetos."
