Emily pulled herself together before following Pam back inside.
“The boss is in the conference room,” Pam said, holding Emily’s coat. Even with makeup, Emily looked exhausted. Pam’s worry was obvious. “You sure you’re up for this?”
“I’ll be fine.” Emily forced a small smile and took the box from her.
Before heading to the meeting, she stopped by Kenneth’s studio.
She knocked on the door. Inside, Kenneth sat with his guitar, gazing vacantly out the window. Sunlight poured through the sheer curtains, painting his already striking features with a soft, golden glow.
He turned when he heard her, and their eyes met.
“You busy?” Emily leaned in the doorway, holding a box of food. Her smile tried to be playful. “I brought pizza. Want some?”
That bright smile—like she hadn’t spent last night falling apart—made Kenneth frown just a little, though he tried to hide it.
So they were fine now?
“Is this an apology?” He covered his frustration with a lazy shrug, set the guitar aside, and stretched out, crossing one long leg over the other. He nodded toward the box. “Guess you finally remembered you owe me.”
Emily took the seat next to him, pretending to be relaxed. “Sorry about last night. I was drunk, said some things I shouldn’t have.”
Kenneth grabbed a slice, the smell of mushrooms instantly familiar. She still remembered what he liked? He ate quickly, half-scolding her between bites. “Seriously, did you have to lose it over some guy?”
Her smile faltered. Her fingers curled into a fist at her side.
She’d probably spilled a lot last night. No wonder he sounded so annoyed.
“What’s his deal?” Kenneth asked, putting his food down and uncapping a bottle of water. “Actor? Singer? Someone outside the business?”
Emily’s gaze met his, but only for a second. She looked away quickly, silent.
She clearly didn’t want to talk about it, and Kenneth wasn’t about to push. He just forced a teasing grin. “If you need backup, you know where to find me.”
