If Emily liked him, life would be so much simpler. He wouldn’t be lying awake at night overthinking every little thing.
Anthony: So, who’s the lucky girl?
The message made Kenneth’s heart jump. Was it obvious? He felt a pang of guilt just looking at the screen. The girl he wanted was Anthony’s sister. How could that possibly go down well?
He could finally relate to how Anthony must have felt chasing after Lottie. Now he was the nervous one.
Kenneth: Just… a friend.
Anthony: Oh.
Kenneth: That’s all.
Not wanting to let anything slip, Kenneth hurriedly closed the chat. On the other side, Anthony stared at his phone, frowning. He fell silent, lost in thought. One week. He could already see himself handing over that box of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
With the conversation over, Kenneth switched over to Google: How do you make a girl happy?
Top answer: Buy her food she loves.
What did Emily like? If he remembered right, she went crazy for durian mille crêpe cake. He glanced at the clock, moved fast through his morning routine, and drove to her favorite dessert shop. He bought ten cakes without hesitation.
Back at the studio, Kenneth walked straight to Emily’s dressing room, bag in hand. He paused at the door, suddenly unsure how to start the conversation. Before he could decide, laughter drifted from inside—a man’s laugh.
Jarrod.
Kenneth’s mood sank. He pushed the door open and found Jarrod laughing with Emily, sitting across from each other. Whatever Jarrod had said, it had made Emily smile. On the coffee table were the exact same cakes Kenneth had just bought.
