Catherine grabbed hold of the bed rail and pulled herself upright. Her hat slid off, and her long hair spilled over her shoulders.
The panic on her face was plain enough for anyone to see, and Lance watched her closely, his eyes narrowing just a little.
"You..." Lorinda stood up, cradling the baby. She instinctively took a couple of steps back until her back was pressed to the wall.
"Can you not just barge in without knocking? What if you walked in on Catherine breastfeeding? How awkward would that be?"
Lance closed the door behind him and strolled in with his hands in his pockets. "It's not like I haven't seen every part of her body before."
Lorinda frowned and shot back, "Not the point. Sure, you two used to be married, but now you're divorced and living your own lives. You... oh, that's right, you never got remarried. You called off your wedding with Adelina. Don't tell me that was because of Catherine?"
She was fishing for answers, hoping to get to the bottom of why Lance broke off his engagement.
Lance glanced at Catherine, and that look sent a chill racing down her spine.
Things between them had been weird for days. There was something unspoken, like a layer of glass neither of them wanted to break. But Lorinda’s words shattered that barrier in an instant.
"What a coincidence, right? You flew in from Cabinda on the exact day she gave birth, even canceled your own wedding to be here..." Lorinda said whatever came into her head.
The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. "Lance, are you seriously into Catherine now? That’s just hilarious. When you were married, you barely cared. Now you’re divorced and suddenly crushing on her in secret?"
"Lorinda."
Catherine tried to get out of bed, hoping to take the baby and put a stop to Lorinda’s words.
"Don’t. Stay in bed and rest," Lorinda said, moving away a little with the baby in her arms.
"Lance, I’m taking Catherine with me," she went on, standing defiantly.
Lance settled onto the sofa. "That’s not happening."
