To Catherine, this child was everything. Lorinda needed to be ready for anything. No one could be allowed to threaten Catherine or her baby.

“Is there always someone outside your room?” Lorinda asked.

Catherine nodded. “Yeah. I’ve never actually left, but usually there are five or six people posted out there.”

Lorinda gave her a look full of concern. “If that’s not being imprisoned, I don’t know what is. Whatever he’s thinking, right now, he’s basically keeping you locked up.”

Catherine glanced down at her baby, letting her thoughts settle. After a little while, she said, “Lorinda, I really don’t believe Lance is that kind of person. But even if I’m wrong, I can’t go picking a fight right now. I’ve got to take it slow, watch for an opening, and leave when I get the chance.”

“That makes sense.” Lorinda didn’t want to make Catherine even more anxious than she already was.

“I’m sticking close to Harrell. He can get word to you. Whatever I hear, I’ll let you know right away. Oh, by the way, what about your phone?”

Wordlessly, Catherine pulled a phone out from underneath her pillow. “Lance kept my regular one.”

This backup didn’t have a SIM card, but it could still connect to Wi-Fi. Lorinda set up a new account for messaging, logged in on Catherine’s phone, and added herself as a contact.

“Keep your phone on silent. If anything comes up, just send me a message, okay?”

Catherine hid the messaging app and nodded. “Okay. But you shouldn’t hang around the hospital for me. Jasper needs you too. Don’t get too caught up worrying about me.”

“Alexa’s looking after Jasper. He’ll be fine.” Lorinda turned her attention to the baby, poking his soft cheek with a gentle smile.

“This little guy… he looks so much like Lance. Feels like I’m holding a tiny version of him.”

She changed the subject so quickly Catherine almost couldn’t keep up.

“And you’ve got it even worse.” Lorinda burst out laughing at her own joke. “It must feel like Lance is nursing from you.”
