The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 497

Lorinda’s hands pressed against Harrell’s cheeks, soft and warm. The touch sent a flush of heat racing from his face up to his ears, almost as if it burned. He couldn’t look away from Lorinda’s steady gaze, her eyes bright and honest.

“For real,” he managed, and his voice sounded lower than usual, words catching in his throat.

Lorinda was so happy she nearly bounced, letting go of him and spinning around with a little squeal. “Yes! Finally, the wait is over. I get to see Catherine tomorrow!”

She dropped herself onto the sofa, running scenario after scenario through her head as she tried to figure out the odds of actually rescuing Catherine. After a while, she sighed to herself. Zero. Not a chance. Not the first meeting, at least—this would just be to check the lay of the land, see what she could figure out. She’d have to find a way to come back again.

“Harrell, you’re still not all the way better. After I see Catherine tomorrow, I’ll go home, check on my son, then come back to look after you for a couple of days.”

Harrell’s expression was dry, like he’d seen straight through her act. “Wow, Lorinda. You’re really worried about me, huh? I feel so special.”

Lorinda just waved him off. “Come on, we’re both from the same hometown. Of course I’ll help out. It’s settled.”

She was so worked up that night, she barely slept a minute.

The next morning, just after eight, Catherine finished feeding the baby and was holding the little one in her arms, trying to coax him back to sleep. The hospital room door cracked open quietly.

Harrell came in first and stepped to one side. Lorinda’s head popped in right after, and the instant she saw Catherine, she gave Harrell a shove and rushed over like she’d been holding herself back for days.

“Are you alright? I’ve been worried sick! I can’t believe that jerk Lance had you hiding right under my nose this whole time!”

Lorinda already knew Catherine was recovering from her surgery at this hospital. She’d just figured that Catherine would’ve been sent home with Lance by now. For days she’d tried hinting and prying with Harrell, but she hadn’t gotten a single useful answer.

She glanced down at the tiny bundle in Catherine’s arms and frowned. “You literally just gave birth. Don’t hold him, that’s not good for your recovery. Here, let me.”

Lorinda tossed her bag onto the sofa, wiped her hands clean, and cradled the baby. The endless questions tumbled out, and Catherine’s throat tightened.
