“Who told you I wanted to meddle?”
Lance felt his chest tighten. His face fell, eyes steady on Aaron, and you could almost feel the pressure behind his gaze.
Aaron just stared, speechless.
Wait… wasn’t it just in the car that he said, “If I’m not handling her, I’ll handle you”? How does that not mean getting involved? Did I hit a nerve? Or did he just realize he doesn’t have any right to step in anymore?
“Let’s go.”
Lance stood up, tossed his jacket over his shoulder, and headed out. Aaron trailed after him. Honestly, it beat going back to Cabinda. There wasn’t as much work to deal with here anyway.

Gavin had scored a massive apartment downtown for Catherine—a full three hundred square meters, plenty of space. He wasn’t shy about taking advantage of the situation, either, and had invited Lorinda to move in too.
The place had six bedrooms, split between each end of the apartment. In the middle, there was a huge living area with the kitchen and dining room. The rooms were far enough apart that the kids wouldn’t get in each other’s way.
“Nice, right? Took me forever to find this place,” Gavin said as he walked in with a load of bags. He spread his arms as if waiting for applause. “Try not to thank me all at once.”
Catherine didn’t even slow down. She went straight through the living room, picked up Alexander White from his carrier, and gently settled him into a portable crib.
Lorinda was already settled in. Jasper sat nearby on a play mat, a pacifier between his lips, black eyes wide and shiny as he stretched his neck to check out Alexander White.
Alexa, who was busy in the kitchen, heard the commotion and rushed out.
“Catherine, you’re finally back! Let me see…”
Catherine started to say hi, but Alexa breezed right past her, making a beeline for the baby.
“Oh wow, look at this little guy. Such bold brows and big eyes… he’s definitely going to be a little heartbreaker when he grows up.”
Lorinda shuffled over in her slippers and plopped down on the mat. “Alexa, you said the exact same thing the first time you saw Jasper. Come on, at least switch up your lines. You sound like you’re just going through the motions.”
